“Stop! No more!” Linus screamed. “This is torture!”

“What he said!” Will screamed. “No more! It’s freezing! Is this what ice cream feels like all the time?!”

Ivy laughed. She was enjoying herself far too much. Both boys stood in their underwear as Ivy sprayed them down in Will’s backyard with a water hose. It was November, and the northeastern fall weather wasn’t designed for outdoor soakings.

“Sorry, boys—” Ivy smirked “—you don’t want to go inside smelling like middle-aged women, do you? I can, but our parents will have way too many questions if you do.”

“At this point, I’m willing to risk it,” Will pleaded, his teeth and fangs chattering so hard he thought they might break. “I want soap and shampoo and hot water...”

“Where’s the fun in that?” Ivy asked. She squeezed the trigger harder, spraying them with more frigid water.

Will jumped away and then shook his whole body, just like Fitz would. The cold water splashed Ivy and she screamed. Linus pointed and laughed. “Hah!”

“So, little brother,” Ivy asked, turning the hose on him again, “are we going to talk about the pantyhose?”

Linus’s lips quivered as he tried to answer. “Pantyhose have a vast amount of uses—as ties, nets, patches, containers, even to find lost objects by putting the pantyhose over the end of a vacuum cleaner, or use as a sieve. As such, I included a pair in my go-bag for odds and ends uses. And good thing I did. With one over his face today, Will was unrecognizable.”

“So, you think we got away with it? Coach didn’t see our faces?” Ivy asked.

“No way,” Will said. “She couldn’t have. I maced her as soon as the door opened.”

Will sniffed himself. Then he sniffed Linus and Ivy. His smile fell. “She won’t need to see us to recognize us.”

“But how?” Ivy asked. “I doused us in her perfume. At her house, she would have only smelled herself.”

“Exactly,” Will said. “Like Linus said earlier, a dog’s sense of smell is extraordinary—which I’m learning firsthand. You and Linus may not be able to smell the perfume, but I still can. And so will Coach Ewflower. Tomorrow, when we go to school, she’ll sniff us out by the scent of her own fragrance, and then—”

Will dragged his finger across his throat. “—the end.”
